WHAT IS A CHIA EGG?
If you haven’t heard of a chia egg before, you’re probably thinking what on earth it is? The concept sounds extremely strange but these little black (or sometimes white) seeds can actually perform magic! Chia seeds are packed with fibre, protein and healthy fats and are essential for a healthy brain and nerve function whilst also lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. In fact, they contain more omega 3 gram to gram than salmon!
When mixed with water they do all sorts of amazing things and can absorb 10x their weight in it, forming a gel like consistency. They are a perfect egg substitute in vegan baking as they bind a mixture just like eggs do.
Even if you aren’t vegan, why not try making a chia egg and seeing how your bakes turn out?
SO HOW TO MAKE A CHIA EGG:
- Mix 1 tbsp chia seeds with 3 tbsp water and leave to sit for 10-15 minutes until gloopy and at a similar texture to a raw egg.
- Use to replace eggs in any recipe!
- If the recipe calls for 3 eggs, simple triple the quantities.
